Curriculum and Textbooks
I will be following the grade level curriculum guidelines established by the Jackson Area Catholic Schools which are developed from and follow the Diocese of Lansing curriculum, as well as the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations. This means that I may not use a textbook in its entirety (or in order from chapter to chapter), and I will need to supplement with additional materials occasionally so that all benchmarks are successfully addressed. If you would like to view the benchmarks, please contact the school office or visit the Curriculum K-8 page of the Jackson Area Catholic Schools website.
We use the following textbooks in first grade (several are hyperlinked to the textbook websites):
Subject Textbook Publisher
Reading/Phonics Open Court Reading McGraw-Hill Education
Handwriting Writing Our Catholic Faith Universal Publishing
Religion We Believe Sadlier Publishing
Math Progress in Mathematics Sadlier-Oxford Publishing
Spelling Sitton Spelling Egger Publishing, Inc.
The first grade students do not have textbooks for Science or Social Studies, although I have some teacher editions to use. I also have a large collection of supplementary resource materials that I will use to cover the curriculum benchmarks.
Important Note: If changes to the curriculum are requested for an individual student that does not already have an IEP, first a meeting with the principal will take place to discuss specific requested changes before developing and documenting a plan of action and determining if evaluation of the student by additional specialists is needed. If a student already has an IEP, a REED meeting will be scheduled with the Jackson County ISD specialists to discuss any alterations to the student's existing IEP.
